Ingredients

  • For the Tuna Patties
  • 2 cans tuna in water or olive oil, drained well
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon dill or cilantro finely chopped
  • 1 small onion finely grated
  • 1 garlic clove minced
  • 1 tablespoon Greek yogurt or mayo
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil for brushing or pan-frying
  • Optional Garnish
  • Lemon wedges
  • Fresh herbs for topping
  • Yogurt sauce or tahini drizzle

Instructions

  • Prepare the mixture:
  • In a large bowl, combine drained tuna, egg, breadcrumbs, yogurt, onion, garlic, herbs, and spices. Mix until all ingredients are well incorporated but not overworked.
  • Shape the patties:
  • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions. Shape each into a patty about ½ inch thick. If the mixture feels too moist, add extra breadcrumbs until it holds together.
  • Chill the patties:
  • Place them on a plate and refrigerate for 10–15 minutes. This helps them firm up and hold their shape while cooking.
  • Choose your cooking method:
  • Pan-Fry: Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook each patty for 3–4 minutes per side until golden and crispy.
  • Bake: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Place patties on a parchment-lined tray, brush with olive oil, and bake for 15–18 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Serve and enjoy:
  • Serve warm with a squeeze of lemon, a dollop of yogurt sauce, or fresh salad greens for a light and satisfying meal.

Notes

  • Use water-packed tuna for a leaner version, or olive oil tuna for richer flavor.
  • For gluten-free patties, use crushed oats or almond flour instead of breadcrumbs.
  • Add chili flakes or cayenne for a spicy kick.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.
  • Reheat in an oven or air fryer to retain crispiness.
